The 2003 Young Scientist Awards, organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Science, saw two out of three awards go to HKUST PhD students. Dr Leung and Dr Tsui collected awards for engineering science and life science respectively.

Received the first Best Student Paper Award at the IEEE Custom Integrated Circuits Conference for his innovative solution to designing low-cost, low-power amplifiers with high performance.
Wai Yip Ho (PhD candidate, Division of Social Science)
Won the Best Graduate Paper Award at the Association of Muslim Social Scientists, for his work on transnational Islam in Nanyang history.
