Comes Next
Just some of the products that have emerged during the year as a
result of HKUST research.
Healthy Time
A novel timepiece was exhibited at the Hong Kong Watch and Clock
Fair in September, incorporating an ultraviolet radiation detector
that warns wearers if they risk too much exposure from the sun.
The device uses UV-detecting material invented by Dr Philip Iam
Keong Sou, Department of Physics.
Going Up Dr
Chun Man Chan, Department of Civil Engineering, devised a computer
package for the optimal design of tall building structures. This
has been employed in the design of many buildings in Hong Kong,
including the 88-story Two International Finance Centre.
Clearing the Air
A nanocatalyst-based environmental control system is being developed
that can be used to produce pioneering products to improve indoor
air quality. Work on the air remediation system has been led by
Dr King Lun Yeung, Department of Chemical Engineering.
Light Fantastic
Prof Hoi Sing Kwok and Dr Man Wong, Department of Electrical and
Electronic Engineering, took part in the Chinese Ministry of Science
and Technology 863 program and successfully made the first full
color organic light emitting diode display on an active-matrix back
plane in China.
