The Right Match
The money raised is being put to use in various ways. A major new area of development is endowed chair professorships. These help retain and attract the world-class faculty members that have built HKUST's reputation and will extend it further in the future through innovative teaching and research and by attracting high-flying students.

Gifts for this use included HK$10 million from Dr Helmut Sohmen and his wife, Prof Anna Pao Sohmen, to establish two chair professorships, one in environmental studies and the other in finance; HK$10 million from Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund to set up two endowed chairs in nanotechnology; HK$4 million from Fang Brothers Knitting Ltd to set up an endowed chair in environmental studies; and HK$2.5 million from Dr Geoffrey Yeh/Synergis Holdings Ltd to set up a chair in the Business School.

Another aim is to internationalize the campus and extend Hong Kong's ties, with scholarships for top students from overseas and Mainland China. The University was delighted with several major donations that have helped in this regard, including those from the Joseph Lau Luen Hung Charitable Trust, the Jebsen Educational Foundation, Dr Hari Harilela and Dr Robin Y H Chan/Asia Financial Holdings Ltd. These not only benefit HKUST but also Hong Kong, establishing community links with the young movers and shakers of tomorrow.

To capitalize on HKUST research strengths, a new Center for Marketing and Distribution in the School of Business and Management will be set up, supported by a HK$10 million donation from Fung Foundation, while seed funding given by the Chan Tseng-Hsi Foundation will help establish a Center on China's Transnational Relations in the School of Humanities and Social Science.

An additional boost to knowledge was received with a HK$10 million gift to the Library Enhancement Fund from the S H Ho Foundation.
