Chip and change
Researchers successfully integrated into a single silicon chip the micro
processes of amplification and analysis of genetic material (DNA), a technology
that enables rapid identification of genetic materials in products such
as traditional Chinese medicine.
Foresight pays
Researchers from the Departments of Finance and Marketing have undertaken
a large-scale project to characterize, analyze and predict credit-card-related
delinquency and bankruptcy behavior in Hong Kong. This issue is particularly
relevant in the current economic environment of increasing consumer credit
risk. The industry-sponsored research is based on a unique and comprehensive
dataset provided by a consortium of six banks. Additional generous support
was also provided by Sun Microsystems and SAS Institute.
Go with the flow
A novel thermally driven micropump has been invented by Associate Professor
Tim Zhao, Department of Mechanical Engineering. The micropump can move
liquids in microchannels without using any moving parts and has potential
applications in biotechnology and chemical analysis.
On stream
The Center for Coastal and Atmospheric Research was awarded 2 million
yuan by the National Hi-Tech Research Development Program (863 Program)
to develop an integrated mathematical model to simulate environmental
changes for the China coastal waters.
