Forging change

With its emphasis on emerging science and technology,
as well as business, social science and humanities breakthroughs, all
conducted at top international levels, we are building knowledge in areas
that will play an essential part in shaping the course of our futures.
With special reference to Hong Kong and the region, we are also ensuring
an integration of perspectives between East and West.
The value of the knowledge we produce has been recognized
by our consistently impressive results in Hong Kong's annual, internationally
peer-reviewed Research Grants Council Competitive Earmarked Research Grants
program. In June 2003, our researchers were awarded HK$91.6 million -
20% of the total awarded to Hong Kong's tertiary institutions - and gained
the highest proposal success rate (62%) for the 11th consecutive year.
HKUST has received HK$308 million from the Innovation
& Technology Fund (ITF) since it was set up in 1999, more than any
other tertiary institution in Hong Kong. We have also seen great support
from the private sector in the past 12 years.
Our success is Hong Kong's success. For the research
we do - in all its forms - is giving the community an edge in what is
to come.

In 2002-03, the following Institutes
were set up to provide the infrastructure to foster new findings.
|
 |
HKUST Institute of Nanomaterials
and Nanotechnology |
 |
 |
The Institute was established with
the largest grant ever awarded to a university by the ITF. The total
budget of the Institute is HK$101.6 million including HK$11.8 million
from industry. |
 |
 |
This is an advanced Institute that sets out to
create and develop materials and devices at the level of atom, molecule
and supramolecular structure. On the research and development agenda
are: |
|
1. |
Eco-friendly microfuel cells
for mobile electronic devices. |
2. |
Nanoelectronic display units to tap the US$50
billion annual global market. |
3. |
Integrated nanomaterial manufacturing to
establish a nano-technology hub in Hong Kong and the Pearl River
Delta. |
|
 |
HKUST/WebEx Information Technology
Institute |
 |
 |
Launched together with San-Jose based
WebEx Communications, Incorporated (WebEx). |
 |
 |
The work of the Institute will help Hong Kong evolve
into a regional web-service hub. Research and development include: |
|
1. |
Next generation online collaboration
systems. |
2. |
Cutting-edge multimedia technologies, especially
applications for small and medium-sized enterprises in Hong
Kong. |
|
Logistics and Supply Chain Management
Institute |
 |
 |
An HKUST initiative, the Institute
seeks to fast-forward Hong Kong's position in these vital economic
sectors. Areas of focus include: |
|
1. |
Logistics management research
in multi-modal distribution planning, network design and intelligent
transportation and routing scheduling. |
2. |
Supply chain network design and demand management. |
3. |
Information technology, e-business, transportation
management, education and training, and government and industrial
collaboration. |
