Under the theme of "Economy and Environment", 42 students from 11 member institutions of the Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU) attended the annual AEARU Student Camp held at HKUST from 30 July to 5 August. Through seminars, workshops, and company visits, participants in the Student Camp learned first-hand about the latest environmental issues.


 

 








More than 180 student delegates from some 20 countries and regions participated in the Asia Pacific Leadership Development Seminar 2000, held from 2 to 8 August. The seminar is the annual regional conference of the International Association of Students in Economics and Management (AIESEC).




The HKUST College of Lifelong Learning was officially established on 11 August to offer continuing education opportunities to the public.





The 2000 Student Outreach Day attracted over 15,000 Form 6 and Form 7 secondary-school students and members of the public to the University campus on 23 September. The one-day program offered a closer look at HKUST's academic programs and facilities.





The Y K Pao Visiting Chair in Cultural Studies Fund was formally inaugurated on 20 September. The Fund was founded by Dr Helmut SOHMEN, a member of the University Court, with a generous donation of US$2 million (approximately HK$15.6 million).





The University was invited to participate in the second China Hi-Tech Fair held in Shenzhen from 11 to 17 October. The exhibits this year showcased the University's success in translating research achievements into commercial products.




Prof WU Weishan, Director of the Nanjing University Sculpture Research Center, was invited by the HKUST Center for the Arts to take up a three-month term as Artist-in-Residence. Prof Wu is the first Y K Pao Distinguished Visiting Artist at the University, under the program sponsored by the Y K Pao Visiting Chair in Cultural Studies Fund.
