Throughout the decade, HKUST has continued
its innovative effort in developing programs that address
the need for social and economic growth. The University aims
to ensure that its undergraduates and postgraduates are equipped
with the leading-edge knowledge necessary to compete in the
local and international arenas.
International Recognition
HKUST's School of Business and Management built on its string
of successes, receiving a series of international honors over
the year. These achievements not only recognize the excellent
quality of the School, but also bring the University's name
to further prominence in the international academic community.
On 5 July 2000, the School received full accreditation from
the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD)
after a stringent review. The School is the first in the Asia-Pacific
region to achieve full accreditation by EFMD. This followed
accreditation in April 1999 by the Association to Advance
Collegiate Schools of Business. HKUST is so far the only institution
in Asia, and only one of a handful globally, to have gained
dual accreditation from these two major business education
accreditation agencies.
The School was ranked 48th in the Financial Times
2001 MBA rankings of the world's top 100 business schools
in January 2001. There are around 1,500 business schools in
the world offering MBA programs. HKUST is the only institution
from Asia to make the top 50. The survey ranked the School
first on the list in terms of international experience, and
second for its international faculty. International experience
is rated by the percentage of students participating in international
exchange programs as well as overseas research.
The intensive summer program in English offered by HKUST's
Language Center received accreditation from the renowned Institute
of Linguists in the UK. The program is designed to help secondary
school students enhance their skills in written and spoken
English in preparation for the English Language examinations
in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination. It
is the first English program for secondary school students
in Hong Kong to receive accreditation from this international
language assessment body.
