Prof Paul Ching-Wu Chu, a world-acclaimed physicist in high temperature superconductivity, was officially installed as the second President of the University.

The University signed a significant agreement for cooperative development with US-based WebEx Communications, Inc.


HKUST received an Area of Excellence award in molecular neuroscience from the University Grants Committee. The five-year project is led by HKUST in collaboration with regional universities and institutions.


The Shenzhen PKU-HKUST Medical Center was officially opened and began to offer a joint MD-PhD program.

The HKUST Forum on the Future Development of Hong Kong brought together Government officials, business leaders, think tank members, academics and students to discuss Hong Kong's future.

HKUST launched the Early Admission Program to provide gifted Form Six students with the opportunity of early entry into a local university.

The Photonics Technology Center was opened to help move Hong Kong's LED industry upstream.

Our campus-wide 10th Anniversary Carnival engaged the HKUST family and the local community in a day of festivities.
