July 2001
On 2 July, some 100 HKUST Track and Field Team members and other HKUST athletes participated in a Mini-Torch Relay around campus to celebrate the 21st World University Games.
HKUST hosted the Fifth General Knowledge Lectures for secondary school students between 9 and 12 July. This series of lectures covered a wide spectrum of subjects, namely wireless communications, indoor air pollution, civil and structural engineering, transportation, chemical engineering, globalization and education.
August 2001
Close to 400 students, faculty and guests attended the Distinguished Lecture delivered by Nobel Laureate in Physics, Prof Steven Chu, on 6 August. The "Biology at the Single Molecule Level" lecture was a 10th anniversary celebration event.
September 2001
The University opened its doors on 22 and 23 September to celebrate its 10th anniversary with the community. Close to 40,000 people, including HKUST members, secondary-school students and the wider public, joined the festivities at Student Outreach Day and the 10th Anniversary Carnival.

The Shenzhen PKU-HKUST Medical Center, jointly established by the Shenzhen Municipal Government, Peking University and HKUST, opened on 26 September, offering the first MD-PhD program in the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong.

Shanghai master painter, Chen Peiqiu, was appointed second Y K Pao Distinguished Visiting Artist and HKUST Artist-in-Residence from 30 September to 31 December.
