October 2001
The One-World-Fountain, the University's second large-scale sculptural installation, was officially unveiled on 3 October. The water sculpture, created by Austrian sculptor Prof Hans Mühr, was donated by Dr Helmut Sohmen, University Court member.
On 5 October the Symposium of Academic Presidents attracted over 70 participants from leading universities in East Asia and Western Europe to discuss the pressing problems of knowledge gap and wealth polarization.
Many of the University's achievements in research and entrepreneurship were showcased at the third China Hi-Tech Fair, held in Shenzhen from 12 to 17 October.
Almost 500 people from Hong Kong and overseas attended the Founders' Dinner held on 5 October. The evening marked the tremendous contribution the founding members have made to HKUST's unprecedented growth and success.
November 2001
At the third Innovation Expo held from 22 to 26 November at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, more than 130,000 visitors were shown HKUST's groundbreaking research, innovative applications and entrepreneurial ventures under the Enterpreneurship Program.
Academic degrees were conferred on 1,812 undergraduates and 676 postgraduates at the University's Ninth Congregation held from 7 to 9 November. Prior to the Congregation on 9 November, the University conducted an installation ceremony for its second President, world-renowned physicist Prof Paul Ching-Wu Chu.
On 26 November President Paul Ching-Wu Chu and Prof Neal Lane, former Director of both the US National Science Foundation and the White House Office of Science and Technology, met with Chinese President Jiang Zemin in Beijing.
