December 2001
Hong Kong's first Semiconductor Product Analysis and Design Enhancement Center was inaugurated on 12 December. Founded by HKUST with support from the Innovation and Technology Fund and semiconductor companies, the Center aims to enhance the competitiveness of local industry.
On 12 December, the Senate Committee on Teaching and Learning Quality and the Center for Enhanced Learning and Teaching co-organized the University's first Teaching and Learning Symposium, "Teaching Innovations: Fostering a Creative and Collaborative Learning Environment". 300 participants attended the event to share their experiences and innovations.
January 2002
The Biotechnology Research Institute and the Molecular Neuroscience Center co-organized the Croucher Advanced Study Institute Conference on Molecular Neuroscience from 6 to 11 January. The Institute is sponsored by the Croucher Foundation to promote academic exchange.
February 2002
Prof Paul Cohen (2nd left), leading specialist on modern Chinese history, delivered a talk on "Remembering and Forgetting National Humiliation in Twentieth-Century China" on 7 February. The talk was one among the Social Science Dinner Series on the theme, "China Rising: The Emergence of a Great Power".
The PKU-HKUST Shenzhen Hong Kong Institution Industry-Education-Research (IER), a tripartite partnership between the Shenzhen Municipal Government, Peking University and HKUST, inaugurated the IER Building on 19 February. The building comprises an educational wing and a research and entrepreneurship wing housing laboratories and facilities for high-tech spin-offs.
The "Chorus of the Night" performed by the University Choir marked the opening of the four-week HKUST Arts Festival 2002, which featured student performances in Chinese music, drama, string, wind, piano and band concerts, as well as lectures on the arts and other exhibitions.
On 27 February, the University signed a Statement of Strategic Alliance with the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) to foster closer collaboration in postgraduate technology management programs. 35 students on Penn's Executive Master's in Technology Management program visited HKUST.
