Heart of a global campus

A world-class university draws its students from far and wide. HKUST's global campus came a step closer in 2002-03 with the setting up of the International Students Office to attract top young thinkers from different locations to study at HKUST. The new office helps organize activities related to the University's exchange programs and to expand the number of international students studying full-time at HKUST, particularly at the undergraduate level.

To build further connections with Chinese Mainland universities, plans were made for HKUST to set up a Mainland Students and Programs Office while an undergraduate exchange program with major universities in the Chinese Mainland got underway. Partner universities are Fudan University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Nanjing University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tsinghua University, University of Science & Technology of China, Zhejiang University and Zhongshan University.

The University aims to move from a non-local undergraduate level of 1.6% to 4% - the limit imposed by Government policy - within five years and raise this to 10% within 10 years.

Hong Kong students and the community at large will all benefit from this move. Increased communication with people from different countries can build up the communication skills essential in today's global economy, while Hong Kong itself can expand its pool of next-generation leaders by employing top non-local graduates in the workforce.
