More than 98% of students who received undergraduate degrees in the year 2000 were successfully employed, started businesses, or continued with further studies by the end of the year, according to the Graduate Employment Survey conducted by HKUST's Career Center. In addition, their mean gross monthly income increased by 10% from the previous year, to HK$12,553.

For full-time postgraduate degree recipients, nearly 99% found full-time jobs, were pursuing further studies, or returned to their country of origin by the end of 2000. Among those advanced degree graduates who found jobs, 48% entered the commerce and business sector, 29% were employed in the education sector, and 17% found work in manufacturing and industry.

Entrepreneurial endeavors continued to gain ground with HKUST alumni. A number of this year's graduates founded new technology companies, and made contributions to the development of information technology and Internet applications. Tobby Chun TO, MPhil graduate in computer science, established Radica Systems Ltd with 1998 graduates Francis KWOK (Physics) and Irene CHEUNG (Marketing). The intelligent personalization server they developed will help e-commerce sites boost sales revenues.

Aided by a grant from the Information Technology Entrepreneur Program, information systems graduate Bryan KAM and five other alumni started "Dreamunity", a virtual student community project, in February 2001. Economic and finance graduate Shing Put LEE founded business ventures which now enjoy an annual turnover of more than HK$8 million, including Shenzhen Xinyi Computer Co, which he started after joining HKUST in 1997, and Xinyi Networks, established two years later.

The year 2000/01 saw membership in the HKUST Alumni Association grow to more than 2,700. Working to forge stronger connections among alumni, the Office of University Development and Public Affairs created a revamped alumni website in early 2001, which allows HKUST alumni to register their personal data. Contact information for other alumni can also be accessed more easily with the new design. The School of Business and Management launched their new Business School alumni website in 2001. In addition to encouraging closer links between the School and its alumni, the site allows alumni to post job vacancies and other career information.
