Honors and Awards
The University Council awarded founding President Prof Chia-Wei WOO the honorary titles of President Emeritus and University Professor Emeritus in June 2001, in recognition of his unparalleled contribution to the development of the University. Since his appointment to the Planning Committee of the University in August 1986, Prof Woo has helped realize HKUST's conception, initiated its beginning, and propelled its rapid growth.

Former Vice-President for Academic Affairs Prof Leroy CHANG was conferred the honorary title of University Professor Emeritus following his retirement from the University, in recognition of his high academic achievements and contributions. Prof Chang is the first academic staff member of HKUST to receive this title, the highest academic honor awarded by the University.

At the University's Eighth Congregation, four distinguished scholars and community leaders were awarded honorary doctorates:

Prof Cho-Yun HSU, Doctor of Humanities honoris causa
Prof Kun HUANG, Doctor of Science honoris causa
The Hon Charles LEE Yeh-Kwong, GBS, JP, Doctor of Laws honoris causa
Prof Daniel I C WANG, Doctor of Engineering honoris causa

On the same occasion, Dr Kam-Ming YIP of the Humanities Division was awarded the Michael G Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching — the University's highest teaching award. Miss Judy Man-Kwan WAI, the outgoing President of the Students' Union, was awarded the Stephen Cheong Kam-chuen Medal for Distinguished Service to the Student Body, in recognition of her leadership and service to her fellow students.

On 29 June 2001, outstanding entrepreneur Mr Sing-Cheong LIU was conferred the title of Honorary Fellow.

External Honors and Award
In recognition of their significant contributions to society and their dedicated public and community service, five members of the University's Court and Council were awarded Gold, Silver, and Bronze Bauhinia Stars. The awards were announced in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government Honours List on 30 June 2001.

The Gold Bauhinia Star recipients were:

The Silver Bauhinia Star recipients were:
Mrs Laura M CHA (Council member)
Mr ZEE Kwoh Kung (Court member)

The Bronze Bauhinia Star recipient was:
Dr Thomas K LEUNG (Council member)

Associate Professor Jack LAU of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering was named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons in Hong Kong by the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 2000.
