The PKU-HKUST Shenzhen Hong Kong Institution Industry-Education-Research (IER), a tripartite partnership of the Shenzhen Municipal Government, Peking University and HKUST, inaugurated the IER building on 19 February 2002. IER's mission is to foster innovation, to promote technology incubation and transfer, and to cultivate world-class, high-tech personnel. The building comprises an educational wing as well as a research and entrepreneurship wing, housing laboratories and facilities for high-tech spin-offs.

A plaque unveiling ceremony for the Shenzhen-HKUST Medical Center marked another milestone in the ever-closer collaboration between HKUST, Peking University and the Shenzhen Municipal Government. The first of its kind in China, the Center aims to produce world-class medical and biotechnology research, and to educate top medical and life sciences professionals, providing high quality health care and promoting the commercialization of research achievements. An MD-PhD program was offered by the Center in Autumn 2001.
