New Programs

Two new programs were specially designed to produce the globally oriented business leaders and "technopreneurs" needed to power a knowledge society, and boost Hong Kong's position as a world-class city. The BBA in Global Business was offered for the first time in Hong Kong by the School of Business and Management. The new program was in high demand and attracted top calibre students.

A High-Tech Entrepreneur Program (HTEP) was offered by the School of Engineering to give students practical preparation for the leading role they will play in Hong Kong's enterprise society. The one-year experimental program introduces engineering students to business and management skills, enabling them to gain hands-on experience of turning an engineering innovation into a business project.

A new postgraduate program in Atmospheric, Marine and Coastal Environment was launched by the School of Science. Divided into the atmospheric and marine environmental science streams, the interdisciplinary program offers MSc, MPhil and PhD degrees, with research focusing on such frontier areas as physical and numerical atmospheric modeling, air pollution meteorology, marine benthic ecology, marine biology and pollution, among others.

The Shenzhen PKU-HKUST Medical Center, officially opened on 26 September 2001, began to offer an MD-PhD program a first for Hong Kong and China. This pioneering program combines HKUST's expertise in the life sciences and biomedical areas with Peking University's clinical strengths. Seven top medical students from PKU were recruited in the first year of the program.
