On 4 May, over 40 faculty, researchers and administrators attended the University's first Environmental Forum, which aimed to promote exchange and cross-disciplinary collaboration in environmental studies, a high-impact area at HKUST. |
In a ceremony held on 16 May, the University Center Hall was renamed the Tin Ka Ping Hall to honor celebrated industrialist Mr Ka-Ping Tin for his generous support for the University and contribution of HK$3 million to the newly-established HKUST Foundation. |
The University's state-of-the-art Coastal Marine Laboratory was opened on 22 May. The Laboratory houses the largest indoor aquarium of any local educational institution and enables researchers to conduct frontier research in marine biology. |
HKUST signed an agreement for cooperative development with US-based WebEx Communications, Inc on 27 May. The industrial collaboration will help foster Hong Kong's overall IT capability and create a leading role for the territory in the Chinese Mainland and the region. |
The HKUST Staff Association organized its first "Meet the President" event on 28 May. More than 90 staff members joined the informal meeting to discuss with the President the latest developments at the University. |
The Photonics Technology Center was opened on 28 May. Established with a HK$15 million grant from the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Commission and HK$1.7 million in sponsorship from the light-emitting diode (LED) industry, the Center undertakes basic research and product and process design in the development and manufacturing of high-end LED chips. |
The "HKUST Forum on the Future Development of Hong Kong" was held over three sessions on 29 May, 17 June and 12 July respectively. These were attended by more than 600 participants, including top government officials, senior figures from the business sector and academics. |
