Students

The top young minds of today will be the movers and shapers of tomorrow. In 2002-03, HKUST conferred 1,817 Bachelor's degrees, 615 Master's and 75 Doctoral degrees at the University's 10th Congregation.

Our first Form VI students admitted under the Early Admission Program for gifted students started their studies in 2002-03, and their highly promising early results augur well for outstanding future success.

The year also saw the setting up of the International Students Office to encourage high-flyers from the mainland, region and further afield to make HKUST their number one choice. Extension of the popular undergraduate international exchange program to nine major Mainland universities is already adding to a broader outlook. In our increasingly global society, students need to be equipped with a wide perspective academically, culturally and socially to succeed. Student exchanges are a vital component in this.

We are also fostering motivation and active participation by making sure students' voices are heard at HKUST. A series of "Meet-the-President" dinners held in 2002-03 enabled students to learn about President Prof Paul Ching-Wu Chu's academic and personal experiences in an informal setting, and share their thoughts about the University with him. Both found the gatherings happy and useful occasions that have increased mutual understanding.
