Changes at the Helm

Prof Paul Ching-Wu Chu, a world-acclaimed physicist in high temperature superconductivity, was officially installed as the second President of the University on 9 November 2001. Dr John C C Chan, an accomplished community leader with an outstanding record in both business and public service, was appointed Council Chairman, succeeding Dr Vincent H S Lo in April 2002. Dr Lo will continue his association with the University as a Court member.

Also appointed to the Council were Mr Peter T S Wong and Senate representative Prof Philip C H Chan.

Six other community leaders joined the Court during the year: Mr Hans Michael Jebsen, Mr Keith Graham Kerr, Mr Ean Khoon Kuok, Mr Victor Lo, Mr David Teng Pong, and Ms Marjorie Yang.

A further three Court members were appointed, namely the President of the Students' Union, Mr Shun-Bun Chan, and Senate representatives, Prof Shiu-Yuen Cheng and Prof Kar-Yan Tam.

The Council appointed Prof Yuk-Shee Chan, former Dean of Business and Management, as Vice-President for Academic Affairs.

Other senior academic staff appointments included Prof Chung-Yee Lee, Head of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, and Prof Tongxi Yu, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

In recognition of their outstanding academic achievements and contributions to the University, the title "Professor Emeritus" was awarded to the following professors who entered retirement during the academic year:

Prof Hsi-Sheng Ch'i (Social Science)
Prof Paul Tse-Yung Chang (Civil Engineering)
Prof Dennis Paul Hsien-Tang Hsieh (Biology)
Prof Shain-Dow Kung (Biology)
Prof Jerry Hsueh-Ching Wang (Biochemistry)
