Faculty

First-rate teaching and research require first-rate minds. HKUST is internationally renowned for its world-class faculty, and for their fine achievements. Some notable examples follow:

Neuroscientist Prof Nancy Y Ip was elected an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the most prestigious academic institution and research center for the sciences and high technology in China. Prof Ip is Associate Dean of Science, Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Director of the Biotechnology Research Institute.

Prof Ping K Ko (Electrical and Electronic Engineering) was awarded the 2002 IEEE Solid-State Circuits Award. He shared the honor with Prof Chenming Hu of UC Berkeley.

Prof Fugee Tsung (Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management) has been certified by the American Society for Quality as an ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt the first ever in Greater China.

Prof Tongxi Yu (Mechanical Engineering) gained a China Higher Education Science and Technology Award first Class.

To honor his significant research contributions in the field of materials science and engineering, Prof Tongyi Zhang (Department of Mechanical Engineering) was elected a fellow of the American Materials Society, ASM International.

In recognition of their outstanding research achievements, Prof Randy Poon (Biochemistry) and Prof Tai-Kai Ng (Physics) were among five Hong Kong researchers selected as Croucher Senior Research Fellows.

Students

Hong Kong's future success depends on its ability to become a leading knowledge-based regional economy. In the past year 602 master's, and 74 doctoral graduates left our campus, taking with them specialist know-how, and the ability to be creative and innovative. Together with our 1,812 graduates at bachelor's level, they are a force for change, and will play a major role in Hong Kong's rapid transition to a knowledge society.

Examples of students' outstanding academic achievements:

For the fifth time since 1997, our postgraduates were invited to present papers at the prestigious International Solid-State Circuits Conference, also known as the "Chip Olympics". In 2002 the honor went to Chen Xu and Dongsheng Ma (Electrical and Electronic Engineering). HKUST is the only university from Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland to have its papers presented at the conference.

Tsz-Yin Man (Electrical and Electronic Engineering) won the first prize in the Hong Kong IEEE Student Paper Contest, undergraduate section. Suk-Han Lam and Alton Kam-Fai Chan won the first and third prizes in Undergraduate Region 10 (Asia Pacific).

Angel Chu (Accounting) and Timothy Tsui (Economics and Finance) were among 100 students worldwide to be selected as Goldman Sachs Global Leaders. Tsui is also one of only 50 chosen to receive top honors in this innovative program.

PhD candidate Ming-Sun Fu (Electrical and Electronic Engineering) reached the finals of the Young Inventors Award. One of only 14 finalists chosen from 216 entrants from universities throughout Asia, he received recognition for a new watermark technique.

HKUST won the second runner-up prize in the seventh regional Challenge Cup, a biennial national competition for university students in academic, scientifc and technological achievement.

Extra-curricular activities:

Dorothy Hiu-Hung Tse, MPhil candidate in Humanities, won Taiwan's coveted United Literature Award in Fiction.

Nahavandi Kurosh (Material Science and Engineering) and Nga-Na Wong (Civil Engineering) both won championship titles (Men's 81kg and Women's 48kg) at the 13th Joint College Judo Competition.

Our dragon boat team captured the Post-Secondary Student Race title at the Hong Kong International event, and came third at the University Student Invitation Race at the international event in Macau.

Our women's team won the title, while the men's team came second at the Inter-varsity Netball Invitation Tournament.

The men's team came first, while our women's team was runner-up in the students' relay events at the Hong Kong Open Indoor Rowing Championships. Our women's team also won the title at the University Indoor Rowing Grand Prix.

HKUST women's archery team placed first at the Post-Secondary Schools Indoor Championship.

Sze-Nga Leung (Computer Science) and Pui-Kwan Suen (Mathematics) came first and second respectively in the Girls' Color Belt Fin Weight and Girls' Black Belt Fly Weight at the Taekwondo Intercollegiate Competition.

Yin-Tik Que (Mathematics) won the Hong Kong men's open event at the 17th Hong Kong International Golden Mile race.

Alumni

At HKUST we take great pride in our graduates, and the role they play in extending the HKUST spirit to the wider community in Hong Kong and the world. Alumni representatives are working with the University to create a more distinctive culture, cultivating a sense of belonging among students and alumni.

This past year saw alumni woven further into the fabric of HKUST through a number of initiatives. Services for alumni have been enhanced by the University, and now include upgraded Internet services providing free email, and an exclusive alumni credit card issued in partnership with the Bank of China.

Alumni associations have expanded to a combined membership of over 3,000. The HKUST Alumni Association organized a variety of programs during the year. These included the "Opportunity and Challenge-Road of Innovation" entrepreneurship forum for alumni and students, "Practicing Leadership in Your Life" workshop, and an audio and video production workshop series.

Noteworthy alumni achievements include:

PhD candidate James She (1998 Electrical and Electronic Engineering) became the youngest recipient of the 2001 Ten Outstanding Young Digi Persons award in Hong Kong.

Nelson Lam (1998 MBA) won the Gold Award in the first Accounting Case Competition organized by the Hong Kong Society of Accountants.

Anna Nga-Sze Ng (2000 Accounting) set a new record in the Hong Kong Women's Outdoor Recurve 70m archery event.
