University-Industry Collaborations
The University's research areas promise ample opportunities
for academia-industry collaboration, as society at large recognizes the
full potential of science and technology. We not only need technology
to add value to our material products, we must upgrade our services and
industries too. High technology is also a key component in the upgrading
of our logistics, financial and service sectors. To fully exploit the potential
of high technology and enhance Hong Kong's competitiveness, a close partnership
between industry, academia and government is crucial.
The year witnessed outstanding successes in this important
area. The University signed a significant agreement for cooperative development
with US-based WebEx Communications, Inc, a leader in real-time web-based
communications infrastructures for business meetings. The collaboration
will help strengthen Hong Kong's overall capability in information technology.
Other notable projects included HKUST's new Photonics Technology Center,
designed to move Hong Kong's LED industry upstream. This is the first of
its kind in Hong Kong and was co-sponsored by the LED industry and Government.
In addition, HKUST, along with Compass Technology and the Government,
embarked on the five-year Embedded Passives on Flexible Substrates Program
to upgrade the design and manufacturing capabilities of Hong Kong's electronics
industry. This is the largest project to be backed by the Innovation and
Technology Fund.
