Public Debate
Research, technology transfer and education are intellectual
resources upon which successful knowledge-based societies depend. The
dawning of the knowledge era has stimulated questions and opinions on
how such resources should be deployed. As part of our commitment to Hong
Kong's economic and social development, two major events were organized
during the year. The HKUST Forum on the Future Development of Hong Kong
brought together senior members of Government, business, think tanks,
academia and students to exchange views and explore options on Hong Kong's
future. Issues and possible solutions emerging from the Forum have been
consolidated into a report and submitted to the Government for policy
reference.
The University also arranged a thought-provoking symposium
on Economic Development through Commercialization of Science and Technology,
which invited technology, government, business and academic leaders from
10 major economies to share their experiences in promoting technology-driven
growth. Both the symposium and the HKUST Forum were a big success and
I would like to thank all those who contributed to the events.
