Excellence in Research

The University's basic and applied research continued their excellent performance. We have created an outstanding research culture that characterizes the HKUST spirit and is crucial in educating our leaders of tomorrow. As a result, we have been the leading institution in securing the competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the Research Grants Council in terms of success rate for nine consecutive years. And we are again the top recipient of grants from the Innovation and Technology Commission.

The University received an Area of Excellence award in molecular neuroscience from the University Grants Committee. The five-year multidisciplinary project is led by HKUST researchers in collaboration with regional universities and institutions. Important work was also undertaken in environmental science and other areas, including the most comprehensive cross-boundary study to date on the Pearl River Estuary, which brought to light new data on water pollution in the area and explored new directions for environmental improvement.
